Reach out for Help at 988

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the United States. You can call, text, or chat 988 if you or someone you love is struggling.  By reaching out to 988, you will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how your problems are affecting you, provide support, and connect you to resources if necessary.

A Note From Our President…

Thank you for visiting Mental Health America of Boone County’s website.  I am glad you stopped by.  We have existed in Boone County since 1954, when our office opened part-time primarily as a resource and referral center for those needing assistance with mental health concerns.  Over the years, MHABC has grown into a multi-program organization that touches various areas within our community, including domestic violence housing & programming, mental health resource and referral, suicide prevention, family crisis intervention, before and after school care and enrichment, and our Young Scholars Preparatory Pre-K.

In addition, myself, along with our staff, board of directors, and community partners work to support those with mental illness through community outreach and legislative efforts.  While we have come a long way, we still have a long way to go.  We often refer to the “stigma” of mental health, but I prefer to be more direct about what stigma is, and that is fear.  Fear is diminished when we bring things out into the light to show others they are not alone in their struggles.  When we name mental illnesses, disorders and struggles and say, “I’m hurting too,” “I’m grieving too,” “I’m sad all the time too,” or “I’m anxious too,” we take away the isolation others feel.  When we support one another, and speak out, we stand the best chance of diminishing the fear that exists in confronting mental illness, and opening up avenues that will allow those who need it to seek treatment.

It is with your contributions and many partnerships within our community that we have the capacity to create a safe haven for the numerous families at risk.  We want to thank those who support our cause and mission. Mental illness, domestic violence and addictions are very prevalent in today’s society and your gifts can change the lives of people. Together we can always accomplish so much more.  We remain proud of our community that cares so greatly for those less fortunate and in need of a helping hand. I thank you for supporting our organization by visiting our website.  If you feel so inclined to extend your financial support, please see our “Donate” button above.

Warmest regards,
